The Right Way to Detox

By Cody Pickett

When you hear the word “cleanse,” most people picture a five-gallon pitcher of lemon juice with cayenne pepper and crushed ginger that they must guzzle for three days while fasting. It’s a pretty bleak image, not to mention an unhealthy one. There’s little scientific evidence that ‘detoxing’ does anything other make you run to the bathroom.

But there is something that can help: massage therapy! Massage is one of the best ways to cleanse the body. Not only does it ease muscle pain and remove lactic acid, it also helps heal body tissue by increasing circulation, and aids in the release of toxins.

At The Spa at Movara, massage therapists incorporate essential oils (which have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties) into our Raindrop and Swedish Massages. With the Raindrop technique, the therapist applies essential oils to the back and then places a warm cloth on top, allowing the oils to penetrate deeper into the body. The therapist then massages the oils into the skin using long, warm strokes to help your body clean out toxins as the essential oils kill dormant viruses and bacteria in the skin.

Facials and other skin cleansing treatments like microdermabrasion facials are also great ways to cleanse

the skin. The skin is our largest organ, and works as a filter. Just as our respiratory system filters and protects our body from much of the pollution in the air, our skin does the same. Dirt, oil and even pollution can collect in our skin over time.

At The Spa at Movara, we use specific products to remove toxins and dead skin cells, and then we replenish and hydrate to promote circulation to each layer of the skin. This not only cleanses, it stimulates new, stronger skin cell growth, so you not only feel cleaner on the inside, you look younger on the outside.
